The Duwamish River Clean Up Coalition, or how South Seattle is Up a Lazy River.
The lower Duwamish River is listed as a "Superfund site," meaning it is one of the most contaminated waste sites in the nation, and it happens to flow through South Seattle before discharging into Elliot Bay. DRCC/TAG was formed in 2001, and is the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)’s community advisory group, representing community, environmental, tribal and small business organizations, working to ensure that the cleanup of the Duwamish River is done in a way that is accepted by and benefits the community, while also protecting fish, wildlife, and human health. When the EPA conducted their “site investigation” in 1999 to determine the extent of contamination in the river, they found a slew of contaminants far in exceedance of state and federal standards. Among these were high levels of PCBs, mercury, arsenic, and sewage, as well as many other contaminates, such lead, hydrocarbons, pesticides, phthalates, and other heavy metals. Despite its condition, the river remains home to wildlife, including salmon, ospreys, eagles, peregrine falcons, river otters, and the occasional sea lion. The contaminated river bed is still habitat for bottom dwelling organisms such Dungeness crabs, English sole, and rockfish. Unfortunately, fish that live in the river are too toxic for human consumption, and salmon that spawn in the river are only safe to eat once a week. This is a serious concern that is driving the cleanup; we want the river to eventually be safe for fishing, crabbing, and swimming. Come to the meeting and hear BJ Cummings speak on how you can get involved.
