SIR Medical Mission to Laos

| In 2005 and 2006, Through ALOHA Medical Missions, SIR Rotarian Phoumy Bounkeua led a team of 12-15 health professionals to provide care in Laos. Activities were conducted out of the New Luang Prabang Hospital and included outreach activities through at least two District Hospitals serving multiple villages in the Luang Prabang service area. Up to six of these team were students in the MEDEX Northwest Physician Assistant Program at the University of Washington

PROJECT GOALS:

To provide primary care to small and remote Laotian villages

To screen patients for further care at Luang Prabang Hospital

To provide patient education

To support local health workers – providing medical and nursing in-service via CME, by volunteer faculty from the University of Washington, School of Medicine.

To provide culturally relevant clinical experiences for PA students

To promote the PA concept internationally

To provide a structure for medical donations from the Seattle Laotian community back to Laos.

To create a structured volunteer opportunity for members of the MEDEX Alumni Association, and the Washington Academy of Physician Assistants |
